Dear Sir,
I am aged 24 and tried to sit for Senior Four in 2005 but failed to complete it due to some problems. I feel I need to go back to school for S.4 and S.6 but think I cannot fit in a secondary school at this age. Is there any place I can attend those two classes?

Although psychologists say age may have an impact on one’s intellectual competence, it should not stop you from pursuing your academic goals.

Matthew Bukenya, the Uganda National Examinations Board executive director, says since you dropped out from S4, you can join any secondary school and begin from S3 so that you have ample time to revise what you studied in the lower classes.

But if you trust your brain, you can go straight to S4, and then join A’ Level after one year.
Alternatively, you could find teachers to coach you from home and you register to sit for UNEB exams at any school. However, this approach requires alot of seriousness.

There are also institutions tailored for adult learners that you could join. There is one near Redeemed of the Lord Church along Gadaffi Road in Makerere among others that are accredited by UNEB.

Besides the traditional classroom lectures, these institutions have a wide range of teaching methods fitting mature persons like you. They include distance learning which involves independent study and group study which includes study networks.

Dr. Jessica Aguti, the director of Makerere University Institute of Adult and Continuing Education, says such institutions would serve you better because you would be studying with your agemates. But she advises that you first find out which ones are registered to avoid being cheated.

She says the four years you have spent out of school should not discourage you from resuming studies. You would fear if it were 15 years or more because then you would probably find a new curriculum and other changes.

Nevertheless, you ought to know that Uganda’s education system has no age limit. Some people have joined secondary school when they are over 40 years of age.

Aguti says how old you are depends on your mindset:
“If you return to the traditional secondary school, some of your young classmates might try to bully you but if you show seriousness, they will respect you.”
