The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo, was yesterday flown to a Kampala hospital a day after he was involved in a deadly road accident on the Gulu-Kampala road.

Latigo, who had initially been admitted to Gulu Hospital, was flown to Kampala aboard a chartered helicopter which landed at the International Hospital Kampala just after midday.

Dr. Joseph Mukasa of Gulu Hospital said Latigo’s condition had stabilised. “He is still in pain, but he will be okay. He is out of danger.”

Aboard the helicopter were two pilots and Ogenga’s wife, Lucy, who described her husband’s condition as “encouraging”.

Latigo waved and smiled at the members of Parliament and friends who surrounded the helicopter.

He was taken into a waiting ambulance and later admitted to a private ward. He was due to be transferred to Mulago Hospital.

Two teams of MPs, doctors and UPDF soldiers, one in Gulu and the other in Kampala, oversaw Latigo’s transfer to Kampala.

Speaking to The New Vision before take-off at Gulu Airport, Latigo said he was overwhelmed by the number of visitors at the hospital and the telephone calls he had received. “It is nice to see all of you here. I am out of danger. I will be fine,” he told people around him.

His wife said: “God is great. I am glad that my husband is alive and still jolly as ever.” She thanked President Yoweri Museveni and the UPDF for the support.

Latigo, who is also the Agago county MP in Pader district, was travelling with his driver, Sam Tabu Onyenya, and a woman, Innocent Awor, who both died in the accident.

Latigo sustained a deep cut in the head and severe chest pain.

The accident at Nyakadoti village in Bweyale, Masindi district, involved a head-on collision with a Mewa Bus heading to Kampala.

Tabu will be buried at his home in Puranga, Pader district, today. The midwestern Police boss, Macelino Wanitho, said Awor’s body was collected from Kiryandongo Hospital by her relatives on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Latigo’s party, Forum for Democratic Change, yesterday ruled out foul play.

“This was an accident. At that time, in the morning, there must have been a lot of fog and any of the drivers might have made a mistake,” spokesperson Wafula Oguttu told journalists in Kampala.

FDC also commended the Government for meeting the medical bills.
