THE Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) delegates’ election could take place this weekend after all.

This follows a meeting yesterday between returning officer Patrick Okanya and the Mbale District Football Association (MDFA) that could pave the way for out of court settlement.

Okanya and FUFA lawyer Geoffrey Nsamba said that they would announce a common position together with the MDFA officials after the disagreement was addressed last week.

MDFA secretary Amidu Masaba whose actions the association has since disassociated itself from, took FUFA to court and secured a 90-day court injunction on the forthcoming elections.

MDFA acting chairman Moses Wagambula has offered to mediate between FUFA and Masaba to withdraw the court case.

Masaba through his lawyer Charles Gyabi, accused Okanya of appointing polling assistants and relegating DFA executives to observers in the election exercise.

If both parties agree and the court case is withdrawn, the FUFA presidential elections will take place as earlier scheduled on November 7 and not November 21 as had been suggested.

FUFA delegates’ nominations are set for Thursday ahead of the elections from Saturday to Monday.

Last week, the ministry of Education and sports requested that the elections be put on hold for about two weeks until the register is in order.

This was after complaints about who from club members would vote and whether the district executives would also take part in the grassroot elections.

Okanya yesterday confirmed that he had already got the final list of three delegates each from the clubs who will take part in the grassroot polls.

These will be joined by the district executives in the assembly to vote for the two representatives to the general assembly.

The election guidelines have been adjusted to allow the chairmen and secretaries of district football associations and the FUFA executive to vote.

This should address the concern of Mbale secretary Masaba.

“What we wanted was for them to put the register in order to pave way for a fair election. Since the register is already in place, the elections can take place on Saturday,” explained commissioner for sports Dan Tamwesigire after a meeting with FUFA officials.

Vice president technical Patrick Ogwel.

“Even the district executive will vote. What we have done is to include those district executive, whose names had been sent to the federation earlier on the voting list,” Okanya explained.

For those that had not sent the names, we have instructed the returning officers to do act,” Okanya added.
