Residents of Karenga sub-county in Kaabong district have been urged to demand accountability of the National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS) funds.

At the meeting with the sub-county leaders on Monday, Karamoja affairs state minister and First Lady Mrs. Janet Museveni said she wanted to establish the status of the government-funded programmes at the sub-county level and get details of how much money has been received and spent.

The minister, who is also the MP of Ruhama county, is on a mobilisation tour of sub-counties in the Karamoja sub-region.

In a statement yesterday, State House said Mrs. Museveni, who also visited one of the six NAADS beneficiaries in Luyoro-Napore Parish, said the Government intervention of ‘Prosperity-for-All’ can only be successful if resources sent to the people are well managed.

She stressed that NAADS was redesigned to address the needs of the ordinary people.

Mrs. Museveni warned sub-county leaders against procuring low quality and overpriced farm inputs.

Several leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, have said NAADS, a programme under the agriculture ministry, is mismanaged.

Last month, agriculture minister Hope Mwesigye set up a team to probe cases of mismanagement and fraud in the programme.

Mrs. Museveni thanked the people of Karenga for growing food, adding that the Government would procure more tractors to help them in opening more farmland.

She noted that in this financial year (2009/10), dams will be constructed in all parishes in the sub-region.

She warned the residents against poor sanitation, which, she said, was the leading cause of the hepatitis E disease that has affecting people in the district.

The district Women MP, Margaret Nakwang, thanked the NRM Government for implementing development programmes in the district and pledged continued support to the party from her constituents.
