THE burial for Innocent Alwori will take place today at her home in Lira, after a series of meetings between her family and Prof. Ogenga Latigo’s clan.

The 21-year-old died in Sunday’s accident in which the leader of opposition in Parliament was injured and his driver, Sam Tabu, died.

Alwori’s family members yesterday said they had been waiting for an explanation from Latigo as to why he was travelling with their daughter late at night, before they could proceed with the burial.

On the day of the accident, when Latigo was asked to explain his relationship with the girl, he said: “I have to talk to her family before divulging anything to the media.”

Alwori’s mother, Ruth Akwir, however, said she did not know about her daughter’s association with Latigo.

Akwir, a UPDF officer based in Mbarara, spoke to The New Vision at her home in Adyel division, Lira municipality yesterday.

She declined to discuss the issue further and referred our reporter to Sam Okwir, an uncle to Alwori.

Okwir, who was staying with Alwori before her death, said: “We have resolved the issues and we shall go on with the burial.”

The discussion, which was held at Kobil Petrol Station in Gulu municipality, was attended by Okwir, Sophia Angiro, an aunt to Alwori, Gulu RDC Walter Ochora and Latigo’s cousin, Tonny Odora.

Odora, who represented Latigo’s family at the talks, refuted reports that there was tension between the two families over Alwori’s death.

Referring to earlier media reports, Odora said: “No one has asked us to pay bride price as it had been reported.”

“We are just helping the family in this trying moment. There are several diversionary and baseless reports, which should not be considered,” he said.

Alwori’s body was transported from Kiryandongo hospital to Gulu 4th Division military hospital on Sunday evening. It was yesterday transported to her home in Lira.

Meanwhile, Latigo yesterday said a medical examination showed that his “three ribs and the backbone were fractured during the accident.”

He, however, said he was improving and would be discharged this week.

Meanwhile, Tabu was buried on Tuesday at his ancestral home at Puranga in Pader district.

In a condolence message, the leader of the Forum for Democratic Change party, Dr. Kizza Besigye, decried the poor state of roads in the country. He contributed sh100,000 to Tabu’s burial expenses.
