AFTER weeks of profound uncertainty as to whether the domestic football league would ever start, the belated season finally commences today with a string of mouth-watering fixtures that should engineer tension and drama.

That said, of the six engagements on card, none will generate as much passion and interest as SC Villa’s home date with Nalubaale at Namboole Stadium.

Season-opening matches are often most fascinating and exciting when there are sub-plots and emotions involved.

And the Villa-Nalubaale engagement should be no exception on the evidence of how the two clubs’ build-up to the new season has unfolded.

Just four weeks ago, Nalubaale were non-existent. The Buikwe-based team virtually had no future in the circles of Ugandan football after FUFA had dismissed the upcountry team over contentious reasons.

It required an out-of-court settlement with FUFA, following a High Court order, to suspend the domestic league, to have them re-instated as a top-flight team.

The onus is now on Nalubaale to justify their place among the elite, starting with a fixture against a Villa side that capitalised on the club’s in-house troubles to snatch two of their prized assets in the shape of Nigerian striker Jonathan Aigbe and star midfielder Hood Mayanja.

“The two will play a key role in the game because we need a winning start,” Villa boss Sula Kato pointed.

To match any ambitions, teams more often than not need a strong spine running from defence through midfield into attack. The two sides are excellently served.

While Villa will look to Aigbe and Gibson Atuhaire for ammunition, Nalubaale’s predominantly Pro-line academy team will be itching to prove that there is still life at the club even after the departures of several first team stars

In the other fixture, if Express succeeds in claiming the scalps of Arua, then one of the main reasons for that will largely be as a result of David otti’s success in making his squad content.
