A RADIO presenter, who allegedly strangled a 17-year-old boy to death, has escaped from Lira Hospital where he was being treated. Frederick Ochan, who works for Radio Rhino in Lira, escaped from a guarded surgical ward on Sunday at around 2:00pm.

The Police identified the deceased as Bob Isaac Okullu, a resident of Jinja camp in Lira district. Ochan is said to have killed the boy on October 14 in the camp. He was rescued by the Police from a mob that was beating him and taken to hospital.

The district Police commander, Patrick Mawerere, said Ochan escaped on Tuesday. Mawerere said they had opened a murder case against the suspect.

He said Ochan killed Okullu to dodge paying a debt of sh500 he owed the boy for a piece of chicken he had eaten earlier. According to eyewitnesses, Ochan grabbed the boy’s neck and strangled him for pressuring him to pay the balance.

“The boy fell down and we thought he would wake up but he did not,” the sister, Molly Ejang, said as tears rolled down her face.

Crime investigation chief, Denis Oola, said they had arrested four people, including a Police officer who was guarding the suspect. He said the Police were working hard to ensure that the culprit is apprehended and brought to book.

Oola appealed to the public to provide information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.
