THE Government will promote small scale producers by establishing facility centres for skills acquisition, a minister has said.

Simon Lokodo, the industry state minister said, “Jua Kali (blacksmith) facility centres must be established in order to promote their activities.”

The minister was speaking at the launch of the 11th East African Community Regional Jua-Kali/Nguvu Kazi exhibition at Farmers House in Kampala last week.

“If we had invested early in the sector, we would have curbed poverty in the society,” he said.

The launch of the exhibition in Kampala was to create awareness and mobilise the Jua Kali fraternity to participate in marketing their products, he added.

“The programme will expand market outlets for the sector products, expand investment opportunities for the regional entrepreneurs and technology transfers,” Lokodo said.

“The Jua Kali sector is important for employment creation and is indispensable for the economy of the country.”

“The Government is aware that working conditions in the sector are not ideal and result in low income, no social protection and representation,” the minister added.

Lokodo said the ministry has embarked on a country- wide tour to mobilise Jua-Kali operators to form association and create a platform for their activities.

The theme, “promoting Jua-Kali/Nguvu Kazi sector for regional competitiveness, prosperity and wealth creation for East Africans,” was in line with the Government’s Prosperity-For-All programme, he added.
