FIVE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials are believed to be on the run over causing financial loss to the state.

The suspects are part of the group arrested last week over a sh730m loss in tax evasion.
David Mugomba, 47, a senior revenue officer, James Malinzi, Ogwapus Namugwanya and James Yafeho have abandoned their offices and Police are hunting for them.

URA sources said the suspects went underground last Friday immediately after the arrest of seven officers who are also accused of aiding Genesis (U) Ltd, a Kampala-based electronics dealer, to evade taxes.

The Police said all the suspects face charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss to URA.

“Last Friday, Buganda Road Court issued arrest warrants for all the 12 suspects. The Police were directed to arrest the suspects wherever they are found. But up to now, the five have not been traced,” said a source.

Earlier this year, state investigators raided the company owners’ homes at night and the shop in Kampala where documents were seized.

The suspects who appeared in court last Friday and were remanded included Nyakato, Immaculate Lugoloobi and Robert Karemire.

Also charged were Charles Enenu and Christine Winyi.
