JOURNALISTS in Uganda want a law that protects them from being compelled to reveal their sources of information.

The Shield Law, as it is called, is a reporter’s privilege, and also protects the identity of the source of information even when the State organs pile pressure for details to be divulged.

The call was made on October 27 at a media policy dialogue at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala, organised by the Uganda Media Development Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation.

The journalists said the law would boost the provisions in the Constitution of 1995 that guarantee the right to access informa tion in the hands of the State.
