ASK THE EXPERTS

Dear Sir,
I completed A’level in 2000 and scored 4DDDO PCM/B. I would like to apply for a diploma in refrigeration and air conditioning engineering at Kyambogo University. Can I be admitted and through which process? Is it a good course? Where does one work after school? Is there a degree course in line with this diploma that I can pursue thereafter? What does the course involve?

Dear Ken,

The ordinary diploma in refrigeration and air conditioning is a good course.

Dr. Daudi Mugisa, the dean of the faculty of engineering at Kyambogo University, says the course is designed to impart knowledge on the practical aspects of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It provides students with technical knowledge of ensuring that products such as heat pumps and refrigerant gases are handled in a safe and eco-friendly way to reduce the impact on the environment.

Refrigeration and air conditioning engineers, Mugisa says, are trained to work on freezing, refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation and environmental control equipment, clean rooms, chillers and energy storage equipment.

According to Mugisa, refrigeration engineers install and maintain refrigeration systems in supermarkets, factories, horticulture farms, hospitals, food processing plants and research establishments.

Besides, there are a number of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration contractors, who can employ air conditioning engineers.

With the three principal passes, Mugisa says, you are eligible for admission. However, having spent nine years out of school, you are ineligible for government scholarship and can only apply for private sponsorship.

Admissions will take place some time in May 2010 after the Uganda National Examinations Board has released this year’s UACE exam results. The course, Mugisa says, is exclusively offered by Kyambogo University on evening programme.

To pursue the course and be successful in the career, you should be interested in mathematics, practical work and engineering. You should also be comfortable with working at heights, in all weather conditions and confined spaces.

Once qualified at diploma level, Mugisa says, there are opportunities to gain higher qualifications. You could do a degree in the same field or opt for mechanical or environmental engineering, which can lead you to other job opportunities such as technician and manager.
