THE UPDF has killed 10 warriors in two separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday nights in Moroto district. The Karimojong were suspected to be part of the gang terrorising Iriri, Lotome and Matany sub-counties in Moroto.

THE UPDF has killed 10 warriors in two separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday nights in Moroto district. The Karimojong were suspected to be part of the gang terrorising Iriri, Lotome and Matany sub-counties in Moroto.
The army recovered six guns and an unspecified number of bullets. The UPDF 403 Brigade commander, Lt. Col. Joseph Balikuddembe, said on Sunday the army had weakened the warriors who had been terrorising the communities.
He said the army captured a member of the group who was critically wounded in a UPDF ambush staged at Nabwal village in Iriri sub-county.
Balikuddembe also said they had killed another warrior near Loodoi Primary School on the Moroto- Soroti road. “Others ran in disarray when we opened fire against them,†he said.
He added that the other warriors were injured as seen from the trail of blood. In recent weeks, insecurity levels in the three sub-counties have reached alarming levels.
Some residents have fled their villages to stay in trading centres and schools. “UPDF is not trigger-happy to kill the youth who would help Karamoja develop,†Balikuddembe said.
He said in the past one week, the army had killed a number of suspected Pian, Jie and Tepeth warriors across Moroto district. Balikuddembe said the army will not rest until all the culprits are dead or arrested.
“The only solution for the elders is to ask their sons to hand over the guns,†he said. In a related incident, Karimojong rustlers recently attacked neighbouring Sudan, where they stole about 600 head of cattle and killed six Sudanese.
In spite of the Government’s efforts to curb insecurity in the Karamoja region, instability still persists.
