The Police arrested 80 suspected vagabonds on Wednesday morning in Ojwina division in Lira municipality.

The suspects, including six women who had no identification documents, were wondering on the streets between 2:00am and 3:00am, according to Denis Oola, the officer in charge of crime at Lira Police Station.

Oola said the crackdown followed complaints by residents of being robbed at night.

“We targeted places that are notorious for smoking drugs like marijuana,” he said.

Oola added that after thorough screening, 67 suspects, were charged with being rogues and vagabonds, which carries two years imprisonment.

The women were cautioned and set free due to lack of facilities at the prison to keep them, Oola said.

He said the area where the operation took place was a deadly zone because it had turned into a hub for marijuana smokers who rape women and rob people at night.

The arrest came a week after seven youths were arrested for allegedly dealing in counterfeit notes.

The Police warned the people of the rise in crime that comes as the festive season nears.
