AN expectant Police woman was among five people who died in a grisly motor accident that occurred in Mabira Forest on Thursday evening.

Ritah Cheptek’s abdomen was ripped open, exposing the foetus in the 5:30pm incident at Lugalambo in Mabiira on the Kampala-Jinja highway, Mukono District.

The accident involved a trailer, carrying cement, heading to Kampala, which collided with a taxi that was heading to Jinja.

An eye witness, Bob Nsereko, said the driver of the trailer was overtaking when he suddenly met an advancing taxi, before the collision.

All the dead were occupants of the taxi, smashed beyond recognition, while the driver of the Fuso and his tonne-boy fled thereafter.

In addition to Cheptek, the Police identified the other dead as Issa Mukasa, the driver of the ill-fated taxi, Innocent Mulera from Kabale, Lydia Nantale and Rita Nassali. Rescuers also retrieved a tiny body of a baby, about eight months, who was believed to have been born as a result of the miscarriage by one of the victims. The bodies were taken to Jinja hospital.

Paul Okongo, the Lugazi traffic Police chief said they were still searching for more bodies.

One man, Amidu Mutebi, who masqueraded as a rescuer and allegedly smuggled cement from the scene into his car was arrested by the Police.

Lugazi district Police chief Caroline Akoth blamed the accident on reckless driving.
