THE Lions Club of Kampala Central on Saturday gave free treatment to about 2,340 patients in Rusheshe Health Centre III in Buhunga sub-county, Rukungiri district. The former district governor of the club, Shem Bageine, said about sh50m was spent on the exercise.

Bageine said 15 specialist doctors, five clinical officers, 30 nurses and other non-medical personnel that included volunteers and HIV/AIDS counsellors from TASO manned the camp.

Bageine said the 67 clubs in Uganda and Tanzania carry out such camps in both countries. The president of the Lions Club of Kampala Central, Dr. Silas Tumwesigye, said most of those treated were eye patients. He attributed this to lack eye treating facilities in almost all government health centres in the district.

“About 52% of all the patients had eye-related problems and those who needed glasses got them,” he added. The New Vision company secretary, Gervase Ndyanabo, a member of the club, said they distributed 100 mosquito nets to pregnant mothers.
