Traffic officers should travel on buses

EDITOR—I request the Police to save us from taxi and bus owners. I cannot appeal to UTODA because it is part of the problem since the association belongs to drivers and vehicle owners.

Who takes care of passengers’ interests? On Saturday, December 5, I travelled to Fort Portal from Kampala by a Link bus. I was taken aback when I paid the usual sh12,000 only to be told that the fare was sh15,000! This is extortion and somebody must save us from greedy transporters.

What explanation is there for this fare hike so early in the month? People cannot have started travelling upcountry for Christmas and fuel prices are stable. For crying out loud it is nearly three weeks to Christmas! What will happen from December 15? In order to minimise accidents this festive season, something unusual must be done.

Traffic officers should travel on the buses and taxis on upcountry routes. When I travelled to Fort Portal on Saturday, I noticed that more and more passengers were allowed on board each time we left a Police roadblock behind!

The driver was also speeding. Please Afande Kale Kayihura, make this year different by changing tact.
