My biggest fuss in the name of Christmas

THE holiday season has always been a time associated with exhilaration and anxiety all in the name of Christmas.

THE holiday season has always been a time associated with exhilaration and anxiety all in the name of Christmas. Sebidde Kiryowa sounds out some prominent Ugandans on what they consider their biggest fuss in the name of Christmas

Odonga Otto, MP Aruu County
Two years ago, I drove to Gulu to see my dad on Christmas. Everyone seems to think you cannot travel on Christmas. I left Kampala at 10:00am and arrived in Gulu at 2:00pm.

It was very peaceful on the road because I was the only one driving. When I reached Karuma, I found many baboons. They are used to being fed by travellers and that day, there were no vehicles. They seemed to expect a lot from me and I offered nothing. They were so angry with me that they could have lynched me!

Andrew Sorowen, Kampala Metropolitan Police Chief/Ass. IGP
In my early life, I expected the old man to slaughter a goat on Christmas. I knew I was always supposed to get a new shirt and pair of shorts. But as a Police officer, the festive season is more stressful. I’m always thinking of how to keep people safe.

“I’m so obsessed with having lunch with my mother on Christmas Day, so much that whatever it takes, I make sure I have lunch with her.

David Katumwa, MD, Katumwa Sports Centre
In 2007, I bought air tickets for my wife and son to Sidney, Australia. We left on December 21 and spent a week there having fun in a hotel. We returned after Christmas. Looking back, I realise it was costly, but worth every penny. I would do it again.

Marion Muyobo, marketing director, UBL
I have never really done anything out of character for Christmas. I would not really call it fussing, but I have always put a Christmas tree and had a turkey on Christmas. It is like a tradition. I don’t buy my kids special clothes for Christmas; I only buy presents. I go to church every Sunday, so I’m not like one of those people to whom it is a unique experience. I have never bought a new dress for Christmas.

(Laughs) Last year, we took a holiday with my family in Cairo, but again it was more about spending time with my family. That is what I believe Christmas is all about. You spend a lot of time working throughout the year and the Christmas holiday is one of the long holidays you get. But we fuss mainly for the children.
