The court has ordered Barclays and Centenary banks to furnish it with statements of accounts operated by the brother of National Forest Authority boss Damian Akankwasa.

John Bagambe, the younger brother to Akankwasa, told Kampala City Council Court on Friday that he contributed sh400m of the sh900m that was allegedly stolen by Juliet Katusiime, the wife of Akankwasa.

The order to have Bagambe’s bank accounts examined followed an application made on Friday by Katusiime’s lawyers. The bank accounts are supposed to show if the sh400m was withdrawn from his accounts.

Bagambe is the second witness to testify in the case in which, Katusiime, is on trial for forgery and theft of sh900m reportedly stolen from Akankwasa’s residence.

She allegedly stole the money which was kept in three suitcases under the bed.

Akankwasa is currently on suspension on the directives of President Yoweri Museveni pending investigations into the source of the money.

Meanwhile, the court also issued criminal summons for Katusiime after she failed to appear in court yesterday.

Sarah Mponye, who was due to deliver her ruling on the issue of the banks, was notified by the resident state attorney, Mackay Kirungi, that the accused was not in court.

Bob Kasango, the lawyer representing Katusiime, first asked for an adjournment to allow him contact his client but she failed to show up.

Only Katusiime’s co-accused, David Ssebuliba, was present when the ruling was delivered. Hearing of the case resumes in January.
