THE Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Lwanga, has called upon Uganda’s leaders to promote unity and address global warming.

In his Christmas message, delivered yesterday at his residence in Rubaga, Lwanga said climate change should not be seen as an environmental concern only but a growing threat to sustainable development and poverty eradication.

“Our political leaders must promote unity and stability by tackling global warming, upholding the Constitution and listening to the concerns of the people. Genuine dialogue and peaceful actions will do good to all of us as opposed to empty promises,” he said.

Lwanga noted that climate change results from irresponsible actions of man that threaten to turn God’s well ordered and beautiful creation into chaos.

“Cutting down trees and destroying forests in the name of development is wrong,” Lwanga said.

Corruption, wars, uneven distribution of resources, murder, child sacrifice and abortions, reflect man’s poor stewardship of God’s creation, he added.

“If mankind is responsible for the current disorder, he is also responsible for reversing the disorder and mitigate its effects from our families to the national and international levels,” he said.

Commenting on the September riots that rocked some parts of Buganda when the Kabaka was advised against visiting Kayunga, the archbishop called for the use of dialogue in solving differences instead of violent actions.

On Buganda kingdom’s demand for federo, Lwanga said all opinions should be studied with calmness and be accorded mutual respect.

He wished the President and his family, the Kabaka of Buganda and all cultural leaders, political and religious leaders a merry Christmas and happy 2010.
