Mayombo’s father dies in South Africa

THE people of Rwenzori region are mourning Can. James Rabwoni, who passed away on Christmas Eve in a South African hospital. Rabwoni, 83, was the father of the late Brig. Noble Mayombo, who was the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence.

THE people of Rwenzori region are mourning Can. James Rabwoni, who passed away on Christmas Eve in a South African hospital. Rabwoni, 83, was the father of the late Brig. Noble Mayombo, who was the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence.

Family sources say Rabwoni’s condition started deteriorating after Mayombo’s death in May 2007 under controversial circumstances. Since then, Rabwoni has been falling sick intermittently.

According to a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity, Rabwoni, who had cancer, was taken to South Africa for treatment a month ago.

Preliminary reports indicate that he succumbed to an abdominal illness at Cariphas Hospital in Pretoria.

The head of the Babiito clan, to which the Rabwoni family belongs, Charles Kamurasi, said they have lost an important person.
In Toro Kingdom, people regarded Rabwoni as an adviser.

He was an adviser to Toro Kingdom and the King, Oyo Kabamba Iguru.
Toro Princess Elizabeth Bagaya said she was speechless and devastated by Rabwoni’s death.

Toro prime minister William Nyakatuura described Rabwoni as a father, teacher and a parent, whom the Batoro will miss a lot.

The Rev. Richard Baguma, who worked with Rabwoni for many years, described him as a God-fearing man who was committed to church work.

A theological teacher in different institutions, Rabwoni also served as a Dean at St John’s Cathedral Fort Portal.

A former schoolmate of Rabwoni, Eustace Kamanyire, said he knew him as a hardworking person, good father and a good Christian. Rabwoni is survived by 11 children and a wife.

His body is expected to arrive in Nyakagongo East Division in Fort Portal municipality on Friday. He will be laid to rest at St. John’s Cathedral Rwenzori Diocese in Fort Portal Town.
