THE vice-chairman of the Acholi Parliamentary Group, Reagan Okumu, has urged the paramount chief, Rwot David Onen Acana II, to intervene and defuse the in-fighting among leaders.

Okumu (FDC), the Aswa MP, said Acholi leaders were divided over politics, religion and land issues. “There is even no unity among religious leaders. Some of them are quarrelling and have divided Christians.”

He added that he met Rwot Acana at his palace and asked him to call for a kacoke madit (a big conference) for all leaders.

Okumu said there were reports that cultural leaders in Pader district want to form their own cultural institution.

“All these are examples of divisionism and disunity among us.”
He said the Acholi Makerere Students’ Association, which was founded years back to unite the Acholi, had been split into many smaller bodies like Nwoya and Chua makerere students’ associations.

During the end-of-year prayers at Kaunda Grounds last week, Okumu said the children of the clergy and well-off people were the beneficiaries of the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Education Initiative instead of the disadvantaged ones.

He advised people to offer land to investors and urged the Government to provide power to run small factories and industries in northern Uganda.
