A priest and two Christians have been charged in Kitgum for allegedly wrongfully confining the Anglican Bishop in church.

Former diocesan secretary, the Rev William Oketa, the vice-chairman of Concerned Christians, Lowum Daramoi, and the deputy principal of Kitgum Primary Teachers College, Arop p’Acire, appeared before grade one magistrate Elias Kakooza on Thursday and denied the charges.

Court heard that the three on January 1, 2007 at Kitgum Town Parish Church, confined Bishop Ojwang in the vestry to stop him from leading a service. The three, who were released on bail, are to reappear in court on January 10.

Speaking to The New Vision outside court after their release, the Rev. Oketa asked the bishop to resign “to save himself from the wrath of God.”

In August 2007, the group wrote to Archbishop Luke Orombi asking him to remove Ojwang over incompetence, nepotism and corruption.
