WHAT was set as a well intentioned victory party for Ronald Mayinja turned rowdy as crowds fought over free meat! Mayinja, the Pearl of Africa Music award winner was celebrating his victory at Gaba Beach recently.

Meat in the African context is known to separate clans and villages; you could only blame Mayinja for announcing that 10 bulls were to be slaughtered for his fans. They turned up in big numbers. In the end, only one bull was slaughtered.

Raw meat was hidden in bras, while others almost roasted their fingers while desperately guarding the meat on the charcoal stoves.

Some people almost had their fingers sliced by a butcher’s sharp machete as they fought over a fatty chunk of meat. Such was the madness that reigned. Emcee Meddie Nsereko never helped matters when he joked that meat was lying idle at the serving point.

The meat aside, the crowd showed too much love for Mayinja, because having congregated as early as midday, they never left until Mayinja hit the stage, close to 1:00am.

You only felt for the toddlers who braved the cool breeze with their party-hungry mothers not showing any signs of leaving for home. The highlight though, was a man of Asian origin who hit the stage and sang Mayinja’s award-winning Africa song word for word. He accompanied his act with acrobatic performances.

Earlier on, the unwavering crowd had shown equal enthusiasm to other artistes, especially Mesach Ssemakula, Haruna Mubiru, Dr. Tee and the Obsessions. True to the showy fashion of those in attendance, they only cheered on when beer prices were increased from sh2,500 to sh3,000. “It is a year to spend,” they declared, drawing cheers.
