SOFAS are essential part to anyone’s home; for that reason, finding the right sofa for your home should be a priority. However like carpets, sofas harbour dirt, dust and stains, so taking good care of your new sofa will add years to its life.

According to Dan Omongin, an upholstery cleaner with C&S Cleaning Services in Kampala, different upholstery requires different techniques of care and cleaning.

There are basically two categories of sofas — fabric sofas and leather sofas.

Omongin reveals that in order to keep your sofa spick and span, the following cleaning tips should be followed.

Fabric sofas
There are certain precautions daily or weekly routines that keep the fabric upholstery of your new sofa looking fresh for a long time.

- Keep the fabric out of direct sunlight, as this will cause fading and deterioration of the fabric.
- Vacuum the fabric weekly making sure you get into all the corners.

- Rotate the cushions and pillows to promote a more even use, which will reduce shifting of padding.

- Keep print materials such as newspapers off the fabric to prevent the bleeding of ink onto the fabric.

- Keep a clean cloth at hand in order to help quick blotting of spills on your sofa.

- Cover upholstery in case you need to paint the area nearby. This is essential to avoid dropping of paint on the upholstery.

- It is advisable to consider professional cleaning every few years to regenerate the new look of your sofa.

Leather sofas
Leather requires some similar means of cleaning, but it is quite different from fabric in other needs.

Omongin advises that one should keep leather sofas two feet or more from sources of heat as heat weakens it consequently leading to tear and wear. He adds that one should dust leather upholstery with a soft, dry cloth weekly.

Lillian Mugalu, a sofa cleaner says vaseline can be used to soften the leather. Dab a soft clean cloth into the gel and gently rub around the leather sofa in small amounts until it becomes dry.

Give your sofas a good year.
