MASAKA-The district health department is pushing for a ban on traditional birth attendants following a drop in numbers of expectant women delivering in health centres and hospitals. The district director of health services, Stuart Musisi, said 70% of the pregnant women in Masaka deliver in unknown places. “We are wondering where the majority of them deliver.” He added that the health minister, Stephen Mallinga, had backed the idea of banning the traditional birth attendants as a way of compelling more pregnant women to go to health centres.



Police probe suspect’s death

NAKASONGOLA-The Police are investigating the death of a suspect in Nakasongola Prison, a day after he was remanded over murder. Joseph Onyo, a fisherman at Kasenyi landing site, died on Saturday, a day after he had been charged with murdering his wife, Jane Aleyo, following a domestic quarrel. The district Police chief, Charles Awiyo, said a post-mortem report showed that Onyo died of internal body injuries.
