ONLY recently, it was transfer time for headteachers and other teachers lower down in the ranks. While there are set guidelines for this exercise, many teachers cry foul, alleging bias and hatred. The question that arises is: is there no direct link between appraisals and transfers?

The education ministry stipulates that one is transferred if they have taught at a school for eight years and above, or do not meet the 20 lessons a week load, or for health reasons, among others. But cases have arisen where teachers are transferred for reasons other than this. The commissioner for secondary education, John Agaba, says appraisals should take place every end of academic year.

If headteachers followed this, they would have better knowledge on who they can work with; and who is ready for transfer, other than making it an issue of personal bias.

Besides, if you can’t work with a teacher, there should be disciplinary channels to follow other than a transfer.
