OVER 400 students of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) have their names missing on the graduation list.
The students, all of whom pursued Bachelor of Business Administration, failed certain papers but re-sat them in December. They claim they should be eligible for graduation next week.

“We were about 500 students who had supplementary papers but only 58 names have been forwarded to Makerere University for graduation. Does it mean that the rest of us failed?” one of them asked.

The students, who talked to The New Vision yesterday, argued that whenever they inquire from MUBS, their lecturers tell them they could not mark all the scripts before graduation.

Sources said the Senate of Makerere University had given MUBS up to December 21, 2007 to submit their list of graduands, when some students were still doing exams.

When contacted, the MUBS spokesperson, Martha Abeja, confirmed that only 58 students had been cleared for graduation.

“Those complaining are not yet cleared. The majority of them were retaking papers, which they had failed.” She could not clarify whether the students had passed.

Abeja downplayed reports that the lecturers had delayed marking the students’ scripts. She advised those affected to crosscheck with the MUBS administration to sort out the issue.

Last year, hundreds of Bachelor of Commerce students missed graduation after MUBS reportedly failed to submit their results on time. The then chancellor, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, ordered for a special graduation ceremony for the affected students.

The Makerere University 58th graduation ceremony, that will take place from January 28 to February 1 at faculty level, will see over 3,000 students get degrees and diplomas. The newly- appointed chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, is expected to preside over the ceremony.

Meanwhile, the MUK academic registrar, Amos Olal Odur, yesterday released the dates when the different faculties, schools and institutes will hold their ceremonies.

In a press statement, Odur said mobile phones, cameras, firearms, batteries, chemicals and other dangerous weapons were prohibited at the ceremony.
