JINJA Municipal council that has been in existence for over 50 years has unveiled plans to upgrade to city status.

Robinah Kazahura, the deputy mayor, said Jinja was among the biggest towns in the country and has facilities that qualify it to become a city.

“We have already laid a city development strategic plan that would guide us on modalities of transformation. We are currently working on infrastructural development.”

Presiding over the Standard Chartered Bank promotional draw in Jinja on Tuesday, Kazahura said they deserve city status and that she was optimistic their dream would become a reality.

“Basoga from within Jinja and other areas meet each month in village, parish and sub-county levels to discuss issues regarding the upgrading of Jinja municipality to city status.”

She, however, expressed her dissatisfaction over what she called the reluctance by indignant Basoga to foster development by setting up investments that would generate income and create employment opportunities.

Kazahura said the majority of investments, were owned by Indians and other foreigners.

She said strategies like equipping women with entrepreneurial skills were being considered in a bid to fight poverty. “Women are committed hence the need to guide the on modalities of investment. Many institutions have opened business in Jinja but locals have benefited less.”
