EDITOR—On Wednesday, you published a story entitled “Queen’s tree withers”. It was reported that the memorial tree which Queen Elizabeth planted less than two months ago had started withering. I found this very sad and revealing at the same time. It points to a deep apathy that permeates Uganda’s public sector.

The excuses given by parliamentary spokesperson Helen Kawesa attest to this. The harsh weather?

One wonders how ‘harsh’ Kampala weather has been in the last eight weeks to warrant the tree’s state. Aren’t we capable of devising means to mitigate the onslaught of Kampala’s ‘harsh’ weather on this symbolic tree? Ahmed Kagoye the Parliament’s sergeant-at-arms partly blames marabou storks.

One would have expected foresight at the very least, since, as he emphatically stated, the birds had already destroyed all the other surrounding trees. Kagoye wasn’t finished yet though, as the infertile soils too played their role!
What happened to fertilisers? Apparently, nature and only nature, was to blame on explaining the plight of this important symbol!
