NGO donates heart machines

HEART patients in Uganda got a boost recently when St John Ambulance of Gloucestershire, UK, donated equipment worth sh33m.

The equipment, which included an automatic external defibrillator, oxygen cylinders, cervical collars, and an ambulance, were recently handed over to officials of the St. John Ambulance Association of Uganda, at their offices along Buganda Road. This followed a two-week training of 11 volunteers who were equipped with skills to handle heart attack victims.

Hospital out of drugs
The Kabale regional referral hospital has run out of immunisation drugs, the acting medical superintendent,Dr. Michael Osinde, has revealed. As a result, hundreds of mothers who visited the hospital to receive immunisation services last week were advised to buy the drugs from clinics and drug stores in town. The superintendent also decried the high level of under-staffing of health workers in the hospital and appealed to the ministry of health to respond to the crisis immediately.

Medical workers trained
A team of health experts from Joint Uganda Malaria Training Program (JUMP) is undertaking a support training of Jinja district health workers to build capacity in management of patients suffering from malaria. Dr Umaru Ssekabira, the team leader from Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University, said the training was targeting health workers from Bugembe and Buwenge health centers IV. He noted that the training involved research, monitoring and of malaria.

UPDF in AIDS fight
THE lower Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Aronda Nyakairima, recently launched a campaign code-named 'UPDF against HIV/AIDS' at Achol-Pii 5th division headquarters, Pader district.
“Go for voluntary counselling and testing so that you can acquire more tactics of fighting the enemy (HIV/AIDS) which has always fought us alongside the LRA rebels,” he said.
Brigadier James Makumbi was appointed to oversee the campaign.
