As Ghana secured a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Guinea on Sunday, a lady planted kisses on the cheek of her husband, then said: “I wish it continues this way.”

But, so too might Ghanaian coach Claude Leroy, when he hugged match-winner Sulley Muntari minutes after his wonder 30-yard strike.

Muntari’s winner was the best possible start to a tournament that had been inaugurated with an inspiring opening ceremony in Accra’s Ohene Djan Stadium.

Almost 100 different tribes were on display as the hosts put on a spectacular cultural show, with original and lively music that certainly got FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and CAF President Issa Hayatou into the swing of the occasion.

MTN had prior to the game, sponsored a Yello Street Carnival, replicated in host cities Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale and Sekondi.

An estimated two million people packed about 5000 pubs that had extended licensing hours. A crowd of about 10,000 watched on giant screens in Osu.

Broadcasters predicted the clash could produce some of the highest viewing figures in television history across Africa and Europe.
