DATA Fundi, a local technology firm, has joined hands with a Danish company Emperion A/S. The partnership is expected to become Uganda’s biggest joint venture in Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs).

The joint venture has culminated into the creation of a new firm, Teleport East Africa, which aims at delivering wireless broadband services.

The venture was confirmed by ICT minister, Dr. Hamu Mulira, while officiating at Data Fundi’s fifth anniversary celebrations.

Mulira called on other firms to emulate Data Fundi.

“We are targeting a niche market including corporate, government and big non-governmental organisations. We are not looking at the mass market. We have left that for other players,” Data Fundi’s managing director Edward Kasule Musisi said.

The joint venture will be supplemented by a $600m Danish government Industrialisation Fund for Developing countries (IFU) that will provide the financial and managerial support to the venture.
“This is a multi-million dollar long-term investment. We are committed and we ready to go all the way. We have the necessary resources,” Kim Gredsted, IFU’s senior investment manager said . IFU has also previously supported MTN’s Publicom.

Teleport East Africa’s services will commence in the first quarter of this year. The services include triple play applications – voice, data and video, Internet and Voice over Internet Protocol access and rural communication solutions.
