The Bugabula North MP, Gerald Menyha, has appealed to private medical practitioners to establish HIV/AIDS testing and counselling services at their units. He said it would help communities’ access information and get services about their status. The MP on Tuesday said many patients in the district visit private clinics, which lack HIV/AIDS services. He was addressing workers of Kamuli health emergency unit during their end-of-year party celebrations.

Church helps orphans

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has donated relief items to orphans and widows living with HIV/AIDS in Kagoma county. The items were handed over by the former state minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula and the church’s country director, Ron Bean, to David Isabirye, who represented the recipients. The items that included 12 Friesian cows, 150 blankets, 150 mosquito nets and 12 bicycles, all worth 15m. The items will be distributed to 368 orphans and 173 widows.

Stanbic Bank aids refugees

Stanbic Bank has donated relief items worth sh25m to the Kenyan refugees at St. Jude Primary School. The items, which included 1,000 blankets, 1,000 plastic containers and 5,000kg of beans, maize flour, bars of soap and cooking oil, were given to the refugees on Monday by Samson Mukobe, the Tororo branch manager. He said the donation was part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility. “Stanbic is an international bank and we operate in Kenya too. So in the face of these difficulties, we still view our Kenyan brothers here as potential clients.” The border town has been hit by an influx of refugees from Kenya following the disputed December 27 presidential election that brought back President Mwai Kibaki to power, though questioned by the ODM members.
