UGANDA’s only female professional golfer Norah Mbabazi has been appointed head coach of the national women’s team.

Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) president Alice Owori confirmed that South Africa- based Mbabazi, who is now in Kampala, will embark on the assignment this week.

Mbabazi will take the team through six weeks of training ahead of the All Africa Challenge Trophy due in April in Egypt.
ULGU has also adopted a new selection procedure for the team.

Eva Okatch, Monica Ntege, Jasper Kamukama, Jenina Nasimolo and former national champion Esther Okullo, who had earlier been selected to make the trip, will now have to compete with youthful players for slots in the team.
“There are several of young girls out there that I felt should be given a chance to challenge the usual big names,” a tough talking Owori remarked.

“I want people to seriously compete for positions in the team. After four weeks, the coach will pick the best three players to represent the country.”

Owori has picked hitherto unknown teenagers Edith Kalenzi (15), Josephine Naluyange (14) and a 17-year-old Kabale golf club caddie only identified as Kyomuringa to compete for slots in the team.

Uganda People’s Defence Forces 22-year-old golfer Flavia Namakula, who has had a great season, has been summoned too.

“We are tired of being beaten all the time. I think this selection system will change the face of women golf in Uganda,” Owori added.

“With these young girls coming up, I am optimistic Uganda will be top in Africa by 2010.”
