THE last week of January was not good for the country’s tax body. MPs on the commissions and statutory committee persevered over the Uganda Revenue Authority to submit a list of its employees. This followed allegations that most jobs in URA were awarded to people from the western region.

The tax body released a list of all its employees on Tuesday, showing positions occupied by tribe and region. Buganda region topped, followed by the south-western region. The list presented by board chairman, Kabanda Kironde, named only five board members and 23 commissioners. This angered MPs, who alleged the tax body was concealing information on distribution of professional and permanent jobs.

End of year exams to stop

The ministry of education is considering phasing out end of year examinations. It says it will use continuous assessment of primary school pupils as a basis for determining their promotion.

The director of education, Geoffrey Mbabazi, on Wednesday told the social services committee that end of year examinations are not very important because the ability of a pupil would be better gauged through continuous assessment.

Govt blocks KCC on schools’ land

The education ministry has blocked Kampala City Council from selling land on which schools are located. State minister for primary education Peter Lokeris said on Wednesday that he had written to KCC town clerk Ruth Kijjambu over the matter.

The minister who appeared before the committee on social services chaired by Bunya East MP James Kubeketerya, assured MPs that Bat Valley Primary school would reopen for the first term on Monday.

A group of Indians is claiming ownership of the school’s land.
