IT is just 48 hours before Sunday’s mouth-watering final — but can we wait that long?

All across Ghana, and Africa, the overwhelming feeling is that this has been the best Nations Cup tournament ever staged.

So often in the past, tournaments which began with bright expectations have declined into a caution-induced sterility that no amount of colour off the field could disguise.

Even four years ago, the obsession with Ivory Coast’s progress and ultimate heartbreak against Egypt in the final served to blind many to the poverty of football in the 25th edition.

But as the 26th edition reaches its climax here in Ghana, it is difficult not to feel that a defining moment in the sport has been reached.

Just close your eyes and picture Salomon Kalou’s runs through a cluster of bewildered Nigerian defenders in the group stages or Michael Essien’s elegant excellence in dictating games here. How about the wonder goals? We have seen contenders for goal of the tournament in virtually each game.

Seasoned pundits admit there has been a transformation.

“This tournament has had it all. The quality of football has been at a different level,” Colin, a seasoned journalist with Kickoff Nigeria magazine stated.
