UGANDA Athletics Federation will have government’s backing in its fundraising campaign for the World Cross-country Championship, writes James Bakama.

UAF desperately needs sh74m to send four teams to Scotland for the March 30 event.

“We know its not easy to raise funds. We shall support you,” promised sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi while officiating at the sh13m MTN national cross-country in Soroti on Saturday.

UAF has always struggled to send teams to world meets. They have at times only fielded competitors in one event because of financial constraints.

Proximity was however for first time in their favour when Kenya last year hosted the competition.

Bakkabulindi, flanked by sports commissioner who is also UAF boss Dan Tamwesigire, stressed government’s commitment to support grassroots sports.

He promised tough measures against those encroaching on sports facilities. Several plots on golf courses and sports grounds, including the Soroti one where Bakkabulindi was addressing a big crowd, have been sold to private developers.

“We can’t commit ourselves on developing sports when such facilities are being taken away. We are going to act.”
