THE European Union (EU) has given Gulu district sh600m for peace building and reconciliation. The grant was announced by the LC5 chairman, Norbert Mao, during a council meeting last week.

He said the Euro 240,644 would be used with other implementing partners like Save the Children-Uganda, Ker Kal Kwaro Acholi, Gulu NGO Forum and the Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative.

“We shall use the money to mobilise the people returning to their villages from the internally displaced people’s camps.

“They need to embrace the Juba peace talks and forgive the LRA rebels for the atrocities they could have committed,” Mao said.

The EU, Mao added, had also given the local government sh100m to enhance service delivery.

“The expected outcomes include; enhancement of revenue collection and effective legislation especially in the enactment of by-laws and other ordinances,” he said

“We shall train 250 primary schools head teachers and the heads of health units in financial management and accountability and also rehabilitate two health centre IIs in the villages.”

The council speaker, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, said councillors would tour all the villages to which the people have resettled and try to resolve the increasing cases of land disputes in the community.

For capacity building in the sub-counties, Mao said the district would procure copies of the Constitutions, Standing Orders, the Local Government Act and Local Government Financial and Accounting Regulations.
