SOCCER - FUFA’s Referees Standing Committee is set to replace the three suspended referees with new ones who passed the fitness test on Sunday. New faces that FUFA will choose from include returnee Ali Sekimwanyi, Habib Aluma, Stephen Kyasi, Mohammed Lukwago, Abu Kalema, Jaffari Nsubuga, Richard Bogere, Joel Ssonko, Muminu Mubiru and Jude Kalemeera. FUFA has suspended Michael Isabirye and Festus Kirumira for a year each, while Liburd Masembe is serving a two-month suspension, leaving 37 referees to handle the second round of the national Super League that kicks off today.

Lira takes 18

DARTS - A team of 18 darts players from Lira will battle in the northern region national ranking tournament due on March 1 in Gulu. Garden Palace Darts Club captain Tom Onyuti confirmed that two clubs, Lira Galaxy and Garden Palace, will provide Lira players for the event. Onyuti said Galaxy will send two teams while Garden Palace is sending one to vie for honours against others from the West Nile districts of Nebbi, Moyo and Arua.

Bekele to miss 10,000m event

ATHLETICS - Olympic 10,000 metres champion Kenenisa Bekele will miss the world indoor championships next month despite setting a world best over two miles in Birmingham, England, last weekend. “He is saving himself for the world cross country championships,” Ethiopian athletics federation technical director Dube Jillo said in a statement on the IAAF website (www.iaaf.org).
