THE President will make an input in the new law that seeks to compel the Government to fulfil its pledges, MPs have said.

“The parliamentary committee on government assurances is in the process of composing a law, which will ensure that the Government is made accountable to Parliament and the people,” said vice- chairman Ocula Nyeko (FDC).

The legislators last week said the President had criticised them for pressurising him to fulfil pledges.
Kaliro Woman MP Margaret Mbeiza said she was attacked in an NRM caucus meeting for insisting that the President makes good on his promises.

“I told him (the President) that we were only helping him.”

She said the Government would become unpopular if it failed to honour what it had promised the people.

The MPs were also concerned that many pledges were made outside Parliament and recording them was difficult.
However, the committee was disappointed when the Government and opposition chief whips, Kabakumba Masiko and Kassiano Wadri, failed to turn up.

“I can foresee a trick where people will not turn up, then later ask us whether we consulted widely, with a view to delaying the Bill,” Nyeko said.

The Attorney General will appear before the committee on March 20 and the chief whips on March 13.
