WITH hot weather almost all year round, we need air conditioning (AC). Temperatures in Uganda sometimes reach as high as 350C. The AC not only cools the air, but filters and dehumidifies it thus making it cleaner.

Edson Mwebaze of Plantek Consultants on Bombo Road says it is a vital installation. Here are some options for buyers.

Split Air conditioners
These come with an indoor unit which is fitted inside the room and an outdoor unit mounted outside the room. They come in several types like the Hi-wall, ceiling cassettes, and floor standing types.
This type uses a condensate drain pump to remove water unlike other types which use a slight gradient on the drain tray so that the water flows out with ease.

Floor standing air conditioners
These are the latest on the market. The Balton modern design floor standing air conditioner can easily be mistaken for a refrigerator. It has adequate air flow which ensures cool air is blown all around the room.

The capacity or size of the air conditioners are measured in British Thermo Units per hour (BTU/Hr) and range from 9,000 to 42,000 BTU/Hr depending on the size of the room they are to be installed.

It is advised that before you shop for one, consult an expert who will carry out the room’s heat load calculations before advising on which capacity suits your room.

Another consideration before choosing an air conditioner is the type of power supply used. Most small capacity ACs use a single-phase power supply whereas bigger ones use three-phase power supply.

After purchase, a qualified person should be contracted to install, service and maintain the equipment. The equipment costs between sh700,000 and sh5m at Balton Uganda on Mulwana Road in Industrial Area.

Air conditioners should be installed in well insulated ceilings.
