The International Institute of Business and Media Studies has awarded diplomas and certificates to over 100 students who completed courses in various disciplines. At the institute’s 9th graduation ceremony recently, 54 females and 46 males were passed out, with 52 getting diplomas. The director, Ezekiel Luggya, advised graduands to work for excellence in their fields.

95 schools unlicensed

Ninety five private schools in the district are not licensed, the education officer has announced. Abraham Were said 30 of the schools have been closed down to safeguard the pupils. He said the schools had been built in structures on the verge of collapse. “We could not wait for disaster to happen on the innocent children,” Were said at his office last week. Assistant Inspector of Schools Jane Nabeta said a mixed school in Butagaya sub-county with over 100 pupils had only a single-stance latrine which all children shared with the teachers.

Migereko urges parents

Parents in Busoga, and especially Jinja district, must take their children to schools in their areas to boost the schools’ development, the energy minister has advised. Daudi Migereko said parents waste money on transporting children to distant schools, because of their high standards. “Some schools here are better,” he said recently at Nakanyonyi PS.

Girls decline in Gulu

The performance of girls in the district has declined, the acting education officer has said. Vincent Oceng said only 11 girls had passed in division one in last year’s UCE. Oceng was speaking at Gulu High Schools recently.
