THE Olympics track and field season started with promise of tougher races after dominant faces failed to live to expectations at Kyambogo on Saturday.

Justine Bayiga, Paskar Owor and Waiswa Lukungu were all beaten at the national over distances, the event that opens the national track and field season.

The event sees athletes run races that are slightly more than their traditional distances as they try to shift their running from the road to the track

Bayiga fell to her training partner Emily Nanziri for the first time in three years in the 500m race. The duo dominated the women sprints last season, with Bayiga taking all the honours and Nanziri on her heels in all national races they competed in together.

“It is just that we have been off season. She had better endurance and that is what I will work on before we meet again,” said Bayiga after the race.

Arua’s Owor, making a comeback on the track after an unimpressive 2007 season, fell to Ndejje’s Benson Kiplagat in the 1600m while Lukungu played second fiddle to Ndejje University’s David Kiprono in the men’s 500m race.

Action resumes in a fortnight’s time with the first national track and field trials at Luzira as the athletes eye the Beijing Olympics team slot.
