TWO People’s Redemption Army (PRA) treason suspects have been granted bail by the High Court in Kampala. But Amir Yayaya Asega and James Tabuga were returned to Luzira Prison because they failed to produce a letter showing that the High Court in Arua had also granted them bail on murder charges.

They were charged with the murder of an army officer, Lt Mawa. Prosecution said they committed the offence on October 21, 2003 at Alube village in Ludara sub-county in Arua district.
Justice Patrick Tabaro directed the suspects’ lawyer, Mark Bwengye, to produce the letter from Arua High Court.

They were part of 22 treason suspects charged alongside the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Col. Kizza Besigye, for plotting to overthrow the Government by force of arms.
According to Bwengye, Yahaya and Tabuga were the only two suspects who had not yet secured bail. Their colleagues got bail after they applied for amnesty last year.

Justice Tabaro directed that if the bail terms were fulfilled, Asega and Tabuga should report to the registrar of crime at the High Court in Kampala once every month.

The suspects were granted bond of sh50m each, not cash and their sureties also bonded at the same amount and similar conditions.

The sureties were, MPs Beti Kamya, Hassan Fugaroo, Charles Okello, and Hanifa Ogwal, a Kampala banker.
