METEORIC is perhaps the best adjective to describe rugby’s rise into one of Uganda’s most popular sports. It’s a trend manifested by the ever improving performance of the national team, the Rugby Cranes.

Years of selfless investment crystallised into a Confederation of African Rugby title for the Cranes in Madagascar last season.

Not even a partisan home crowd of 35,000 could stop Uganda in the final where they beat the hosts 42-11.
The Cranes jolted the hosts as early as the first minute with a well taken Anthony Kinene penalty.

Another Kinene penalty, tries from Edmund Tumusiime, Robert Sseguya, Ronald Mwisaka and Allan Musoke led Uganda to its biggest win ever.
Because of this title, the Cranes were nominated by USPA to contest for the top sports award.

Athlete Moses Kipsiro, the national cricket side, footballer David Obua, rally driver Suzan Muwonge are the other nominees. The winner will be announced at the USPA gala tomorrow.

The triumphant Cranes: J. Musoke (D. Etuket), 14. A. Musoke (B. Tabaruka), 13. T. Mudoola, 12. T. Luggya, 11 B. Morro (F. Lubega), 10. Tumusiime, 9. A. Kinene (A. Masiko), 8. M. Soita, 7. M.
