PUPILS’ absence from school, especially in the afternoon, is causing concern among teachers.
Christine Settimba, the headteacher of St. Joseph Namataba Primary School in Bweyogerere, said there is an increase in the number of pupils who do not turn up for afternoon lessons, giving lame excuses, but the habit is mostly attributed to lack of lunch at school.

“Some parents do not pack lunch or give money to their children.

This negatively impacts on their level of participation,” said Settimba.
Addressing parents, teachers and pupils at the school recently, she urged parents to provide lunch for their children, saying the Government does not have the capacity to provide lunch for the children.

“Most schools under the Universal Primary Education programme are not fenced to prevent pupils from escaping. Pupils who do not escape are always dozing and are absent-minded due to hunger,” said Settimba.

She said efforts are being made to ensure that the school’s academic standards are elevated and urged all stakeholders to cooperate.
