LEGISLATORS want the Auditor General’s tenure reviewed to a 10-year non-renewable term.

The MPs on the public accounts and finance committees argued that the current five-year renewable contract is open to abuse through the appointing authority influencing the Auditor General’s work.

“We are not comfortable with this kisanja thing. The AG must be completely independent from the appointing authority if he is to perform without being compromised. He should work and then retire at once,” argued Ssebuliba Mutumba (DP), the public accounts committee vice-chairman, during debate on a Bill to give the Auditor General’s office financial and managerial autonomy.

The two committees are currently holding a retreat in Jinja.

Henry Banyenzaki (NRM) called for total reform in the recruitment structure of top auditors.
