THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has appealed to its supporters to contribute money to pay sh24m in damages to two judges its officials falsely accused of taking bribes.

Party president Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye made the appeal yesterday during the weekly press conference at the party’s head offices in Najjanankumbi.

In October 2006, Winnie Byanyima and Jack Sabiti agreed to pay Laetitia Kikonyogo and Remmy Kasule damages for claiming that they took a bribe from State House in the run-up to the 2006 elections.

The FDC officials wrote a confidential letter on December 24, 2006 to chief justice Benjamin Odoki, asking him to investigate claims that the judges had got sh300m not to grant bail to Besigye, who was on remand in Luzira. The press published the letter.

On August 3, 2007, Byanyima and Sabiti wrote an apology to the judges. They agreed to pay sh35m, plus an additional sh9m as costs of the suit.
