FURNITURE firm, Hwan Sung has helped three heart patients get surgery in South Korea. The beneficiaries are Samuel Erioru, 6, who is suffering from congenital heart disease, William Ntulume, 20, and Agatha Nekesa, 17, with a rheumatic heart disease.

“Their cases could not be handled locally for lack of the necessary facilities. We, therefore, have chosen P.Y. Park, an experienced surgeon, to work on them in South Korea,” the company director, Sung-Hwan Kim, said in a statement on Friday.

He said the three would be operated on at Sum Sung Seoul on Wednesday.
Kim added that the company had spent $105,000 (about sh178m) on the patients.

“Erioru’s surgery will cost $25,000, while that of Ntulume and Nekesa each cost $35,000 (sh59.5m). This excludes other expenditures like fares and living expenses.”

So far, Hwan Sung has also sponsored 12 heart operations. One was done at Mulago and 11 at the International Hospital Kampala.

Kim said they received over 120 applications from heart patients seeking help. “Many heart patients cannot afford huge surgery costs, making their future uncertain. Therefore, they are desperately waiting to be helped.”

In the 2008/2009 financial year, the Hwan Sung Medical Charity Services has earmarked $119,000 (about sh202.3m) for a free mobile clinic for dental and internal diseases.
