Kakungulu Cup
Today, 4.30pm
Simba v Express FC
KNOCKOUT competitions are so often at their very best and most absorbing when there are subplots involved. Today’s Kakungulu Cup tie between army side Simba and holders Express FC is one such game.
The fixture finally matures after subsequent changes in venues and match-day dates.
The Red Eagles, still spinning high in confidence following their run in the Confederations Cup, go into the game aware that the enemy is not merely the 11 cards their opponents will set out.
But largely from the one-man who helped them to the silverware last season, the one-man that miraculously steered their sinking ship clear of the relegation in the shape of Sam Ssimbwa.
“It’s unfortunate this game has come at a time when we are fighting relegation. Our primary priority is the league,†Ssimbwa stated.
“But that does not mean that the largely second string side I intend to field will simply play for the sake. I expect them to fight to the end,†he added. Simba will build their play on the shoulders of league top scorer Brunno Olobo.
